New iPhone likely as O2 and T-Mobile slash prices

July 23rd, 2009

elec.sliveronline.comThe hottest smartphones could be coming to UK users at rockbottom prices from May, with O2 set to slash the cost of owning a 16Gb iPhone 3G, reportedly in advance of a new iPhone launch, and T-Mobile doing the same for the G1.

It looks increasingly likely that Apple will release an upgraded iPhone 3G this June or July in the UK, but it is still very unclear what this will look like. The pundits are split between those who expect a ’superphone’ to fend off the Palm Pre, LG Arena and others – with heavyweight memory, video, camera and other features where the iPhone has lagged behind the big hitters of the smartphone market; plus enhancements to the browser, widgets and multitouch experience.

After all, Apple’s place at the top of the multitouch pile, which has been proven to drive mobile web usage, is now threatened by Palm, LG and others, and even the lawsuits that Apple is said to be preparing won’t stop the challengers if users take to their upgrades.

But most major players, like the Android community and Nokia, are still lagging behind on multitouch and other important user interface features, and so other commentators think Apple will stick with its advantage at the high end and focus on a whole new format for the iPhone to increase its appeal to the midrange mobile web users and those feeling the credit crunch.

MOTOROKR rocks in with U2’s new album

July 21st, 2009

elec.sliveronline.comA slew of forthcoming music phones from Motorola’s MOTOROKR range will come fully loaded with digital copies of U2’s new album No Line on the Horizon, in a bid to drive sales of the new handset and to tap in to the increasingly lucrative mobile music market, which according to recent figures from Portico Research, accounted for a cool $11.7 billion of revenue in 2008.

As well as having all the tracks from No Line, the handsets will also come with a video for the lead single “Get On Your Boots” - currently not being enjoyed by YouTube viewers in the UK - wallpapers, ringtones, and an as of yet unnamed bonus track exclusive to the phones.

The phones in question are MOTOROKR EM25, EM28, EM30 and EM35 (pictured), and will only be available to customers in Latin America - for the time being at least.

Motorola have previously had success in the Latin market with their W388 and W231 handsets which came pre-loaded with music from Brazilian rockers NXZero, and with No Line already racking up 500,000 sales in the US alone within its first week, Motorola are probably on to a nice little earner here.

The changed face of meetings in corporate Australia

July 20th, 2009

elec.sliveronline.comPart of my job often involves doing this that are not really IT in nature, but utilize IT. Its kind of like when you ar ethe only guy in the house who knows how to program the VCR then everyone is goign to ask you for help on how to watch the TV. One of the biggest issues i have been finding is with meetings. One of our larger clients is hosting a big training session where 7 state offices will join remotely. Its taken mee over 2 weeks now to get everyone organized and talking properly. From a technological perspective, you dont need much. Just a computer that has internet acces and a sound card! mobile phones, baby monitor, new bose, music player2009 camera Most people are so afraid of their computers these days, they will palm the work off to the IT not because its their job but becaus ethey are lazy and dont want to use their brains a little bit to expand their minds. A good example of this is one of the Directors of this client. Aftre using a popular service called Goto Meeting, i wont post a likn unless they give me a free acount, he realized its potential and without any IT advice asked me if he could use this to teach HIS clients remotely how to use particular software, or how to do something on a securities web site etc… This guy used his brain a little and got a llot out of it. I think thats what seperates the sheeple from the people. That and all of you who use Iphones…Baaaaaa

BlackBerry App World touches down

July 18th, 2009

elec.sliveronline.comYesterday Research in Motion unveiled the long awaited BlackBerry App World. We were still too busy reeling from the shock of Qualcomm’s avian breakthrough to have time to check it out ourselves, so first thing this morning we fired up our BlackBerry Storm and decided to have a look.

Downloading App World took less than couple of minutes on a 3G connection using a BlackBerry Storm. App World, like all downloaded stuff, ends up in your Downloads folder. When you launch App World, the most popular applications are listed on its home screen - unsurprisingly, most of these are free. As with buying apps on the iPhone, you can perform a search, browse by category, or view the top 25 downloads.

It’s Thursday, so you all know what that means: my stomach is in knots over who could go home, Cat is most likely wearing a questionable outfit, and a musical guest is about to do some lip synching. While we have the serious business of eliminating two talented dancers tonight, there’s sure to be a celebratory mood in the air with the news of So You Think You Can Dance’s five Emmy nominations. Expect a lot of well deserved back patting and compliments between Nigel, the judges, and choreographers. And let us extend them ourselves–congrats!

Beyond the biggest question of the night: who’s going home? Another questions looms heavy: with no solos, what will this hour be filled with? With no dance for your lives solo anywhere in sight, a long night of filler could await us, but we’ll have to watch along together to find out. Not only will I be composing my thoughts on the results show live right here, you can also follow along with me in 140 character bursts on BuddyTV’s So You Think You Can Dance twitter.

Nokia N96 Expected In August 2008

July 16th, 2009

The Nokia N96 is the most anticipated phone since, well, the N95, but despite months of speculation and countless photoshopped mockups on the web, no official release date has been announced. The eagle eyes guys at Reg Hardware however have spotted the advert in the Carphone Warehouse ezine, The Insider, which reveals that the N96 is going to be released next month.

Ignore everyone who says the Nokia N96 is simply a ‘sister’ phone to the Nokia N95. Although the N96 doesn’t improve on certain key areas enough to make it a genuine replacement, there are plenty of new, exciting features added for it to be labeled an ‘evolution’ of the N95’s ‘multimedia computer’. Well, if the N95 is a multimedia computer, then it’s looking its age and about to get sand kicked in its face by the new Nokia N96

The N96’s improvements are noticeable immediately thanks to the total redesign, which can be viewed as a resounding success. The piano black casing looks sleek and modern, the keypad is larger and more attractively designed and the Continue reading “Nokia N96 Expected In August 2008″

O2 Cuts Price Of iPhone Until June

July 15th, 2009

elec.sliveronline.comIf you’re tempted by the thought of bagging yourself an Apple iPhone but have been put off by the rather hefty price then there’s some good news. O2 has announced that it will take £100 off the price of the iPhone, taking the 8GB model down to £169 until 1st June.

Despite the fact it’s a sure-fire winner in the looks stakes, the iPhone has struggled somewhat in the UK market due to its restricted features. The fact of the matter is that the UK has a far more sophisticated mobile phone industry, used to more advanced connectivity features than its US counterpart. Although a new 3G model is on its way, many feel that the UK release was a rush job, meaning it performed quite badly in the competitive Continue reading “O2 Cuts Price Of iPhone Until June”

More than 2 Million Cookies sold in LG’s bake sale

July 13th, 2009

elec.sliveronline.com

LG has just announced that worldwide sales of their highly successful Cookie touchscreen have exceeded the 2 million mark. Since LG took the first batch of Cookies out of its oven last October, they’ve been flying off the shelves like hot cakes.

mobile phones,baby monitor,new bose,music player2009 camera

The LG Cookie was a hit right from the start - a nicely designed touchscreen tablet that wasn’t too expensive. The Cookie comes with a 3-inch display, auto-rotate, a basic 3 megapixel camera and support for all of the popular music files; good enough features to be attractive to the average consumer, but not so advanced that they drove the cost of the handset through the roof.

“LG wanted to allow more people to benefit from the advanced touch technology that we have introduced in previous touchscreen handsets,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Because of our extensive background in touchscreen handsets, we are now able to bring this innovative technology to consumers at an affordable price without compromising on feature quality.”

Available in a variety of flavours, including the standard Black (dark chocolate) the incredibly popular Pink (strawberry), and the O2-exclusive White (vanilla icing), the LG Cookie has been a big hit in markets all across the world, and will almost certainly continue to be a strong seller throughout 2009.

Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett: TV pays tribute

July 3rd, 2009

elec.sliveronline.com

The entertainment industry lost two legends on Thursday with the deaths of Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett.

I remember both of them fondly from my childhood. My brother and I had a poster that on one side had the Jackson 5, and the other the Osmonds. We would switch it up each week, but eventually it stayed on the Jacksons.

And as for Farrah Fawcett, I used to sneak watch “Charlie’s Angels,” hiding behind the couch so my parents didn’t know I was there. (I did the same thing to see “Sonny & Cher.”) My brother had her famous swimsuit poster on his wall, and I grew to appreciate her even more years later, when she turned in raw, unexpected performances in such TV movies as “The Burning Bed.”

Several TV networks have responded to the deaths with tributes to the two icons that already are underway. Here’s a list of the ones of which I’m aware, with descriptions provided by the networks.

Lucas Glover Steals US Open Title

June 23rd, 2009

elec.sliveronline.com

It wasn’t supposed to end like that. Not at all. Phil Mickelson was supposed to claim the US Open title for his wife Amy. David Duval was supposed to give the 1980 USA hockey team a run for its money on underdog stories. And heck, we haven’t even gotten to Tiger Woods and his first-round collapse that ended up costing him the tournament.

mobile phones,baby monitor,new bose,music player2009 camera

Nope. It wasn’t supposed to go the way it did, but the US Open never does. Lucas Glover, the 29-year-old that married his soul mate and reads a book a week, came out of nowhere to claim the 2009 US Open title on great drive and gutsy putting. Glover had never finished in the top-10 in any major and had missed the cut in all of his previous US Open appearances, but this was Bethpage Black and Glover can do one thing better than anyone … drive the golf ball.
